Scoring

Add up all the answers you checked and divide that sum by 20.

Interpretation of Scores

This is a scale that measures whether you are avoiding stress as indicated by the absence of common problems and complaints. If you scored higher than 4, you experience enough problems and complaints to indicate a gigh level of distress. If you scored lower than 4, you experience a manageable level of stress.

Glance at the items on the Psychological Health Scale once again. Notice that they concern feelings and thoughts, not actions. And yet, these thoughts and feelings may govern what you do and decisions you make, even when they are irrational. For example, you may know that it is irrational to believe that you have to be all-knowing, perfect and infallible. No one can be like that. And yet, you may be afraid to ask someone on a date for fear of rejection that would demonstrate  your imperfection, or to take on a difficult assignment or college course for fear of failing, or to raise your hand in class to ask a question for fear that others will laugh at you when you demonstrate how little you know about the topic being discussed. The psychologist Albert Ellis wrote extensively of the influences of these irrational beliefs.
