Commuter
stress can affect your moods, health and even sabotage your work performance.
Are you experiencing problems relating to one or a combination of the following
factors: Car repairs? Gas prices? Traffic congestion? Over-crowded roads? Few
available parking spots? Expensive parking spots? Trying to deal with or avoid
"Road Rage"? Bridge tolls? Long hours getting to and from work? If
your answer is yes to this question then you are one of millions of individuals
who are experiencing commuter stress. Simply put, commuter stress relates to the
various experiences travelers, i.e., mainly motorists, have on the road as they
try getting to and from work. Apart from
one of the obvious options of moving closer to work, there are several other
options commuters have that can reduce commuters’ stress. One very important
option, which also helps to reduce the environmental hazard of pollution is "rior "car-pooling." However, while car-pooling has been shown
to reduce stress, if certain cautions are not taken it can be stressful itself.
For example, try to make the inside of the car as clean and comfortable as
possible, drive alternate routes ever so often to break the monotony of the
drive, stretch during the drive as well as when you finally exit the care, and
lastly wear your seat belts at all times. Depending
on the particular circumstances involved (e.g., distance lived), other options
include taking the local transit buses, using a ferry, walking or bicycling, or
parking and riding. All of these options reduces the stresses associated with
commuting in some way. In the case of car pooling, which is perhaps the most
frequent option used, the benefits include: rotating driving schedules, shared
commuting expenses (e.g., gas, tools, parking, wear-and-tear on cars), and
ability to relax or carry on conversations with commuting colleagues). |
